Methodist
Home for Children and Wendys Team Up for Adoption
February, 2003,
RALEIGH, NC
When
most children think of Wendy’s, they imagine a burger, fries,
and a junior frosty shake. But Wendy’s has teamed up with
Methodist Home for Children to help provide a much bigger treat
for young people in the state’s foster care system: permanent
homes through adoption.
Through the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Wendy’s restaurants
throughout North Carolina and parts of South Carolina have chosen
Methodist Home for Children as their charity of choice for an annual
Halloween promotion. In 2002, Wendy’s patrons purchased $28,382.00
in trick or treat gift booklets; these funds support Methodist Home
for Children’s foster and adoption services. "This figure
is more than double the amount raised during the 2001 Wendy’s
promotion," says Polly Willis, MHC’s director of development.
"We are thrilled and grateful for the public’s support,
for all the Wendy’s restaurants that participated, and for
the Dave Thomas Foundation, which is contributing an additional
$10,000 to support Methodist Home’s adoption efforts."
"We
are committed to do all we can to promote adoption in North Carolina,"
says Dave Lierman, field marketing manager for the Wendy’s
restaurants in eastern North Carolina. Wendy’s founder, Dave
Thomas, established the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992
to generate awareness about the thousands of children in America
who are waiting for permanent homes and loving families and to educate
prospective parents about the adoption process.
In addition to the Halloween booklet sales, Wendy’s has teamed
up with MHC and FOX 50 WRAZ-TV in the Triangle to find adoptive
homes for children through "Connect a Child," an initiative
which profiles some of the state’s 1,000 children available
for adoption. Connect a Child appears during the FOX 50 10:00 p.m.
newscast each Thursday.
The Methodist Home for Children has been helping troubled children,
youth, and families for more than 100 years. Our nonprofit agency
serves all children and families regardless of religion, race, or
economic status. We provide community-based residential youth homes,
foster care, adoption services, substance abuse services, family-based
counseling, and childcare. MHC has three regional offices in Raleigh,
Greenville, and Wilmington; we are active in communities throughout
the Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina.
