Home for Children and Wendy’s Team Up for Adoption

When most children think of Wendy’s, they imagine a burger,
fries, and a junior frosty shake. But Wendy’s is teaming up
with the Methodist Home for Children to help provide a much bigger
treat for young people in the state’s foster care system: permanent
homes through adoption.
Wendy’s presented Methodist Home for Children with a check
for $12,700 in December 2001 to support its foster and adoptive
services. The funds were raised through sales of trick-or-treat
gift booklets which were sold through 52 Wendy’s restaurants
in central and eastern North Carolina.
Wendy’s anticipates making the Halloween promotion an annual
event, according to Dave Lierman, field marketing manager for the
Wendy’s restaurants in eastern North Carolina. "We are
committed to do all we can to promote adoption in North Carolina,"
he said. Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, established the Dave
Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992 to generate awareness about
the thousands of children in America who are waiting for permanent
homes and loving families and to educate prospective parents about
the adoption process.
In addition to the Halloween booklet sales, Wendy’s has teamed
up with the Methodist Home for Children and FOX 50 WRAZ-TV to find
adoptive homes for children through "Connect a Child,"
an initiative which profiles some of the state’s 1,000 children
available for adoption. Connect a Child appears during the FOX 50
10:00 p.m. newscast each Thursday.
"We share the mission of finding permanent homes for special
needs children—meaning sibling groups, older children, and
those with particular emotional and physical needs," said Michael
Safley, president of the Methodist Home for Children. "We encourage
those interested in adopting to become foster parents with us first.
We work with parents every step of the way to help create forever
families. We very much appreciate the support of Wendy’s."
